IGBT Snubber Capacitors
In power electronics, IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) are widely used for switching applications. However, their fast switching speeds can lead to undesirable effects like:
- High dv/dt (rate of change of voltage): This can cause excessive voltage spikes across the IGBT, potentially damaging the device.

How IGBT Snubber Capacitors Work
- Voltage Spikes: When the IGBT turns off, the parasitic inductance in the circuit can cause a rapid rise in voltage across the device. The snubber capacitor absorbs this sudden voltage surge, limiting the peak voltage across the IGBT.
- Current Switching: During the turn-off transition, the snubber capacitor provides a path for the current to flow temporarily, reducing the di/dt and minimizing EMI.
