Film Capacitor Manufacturing Process
1.Film Stretching:Thin plastic film (e.g., polypropylene) is stretched biaxially to achieve the desired thickness and dielectric properties. This process significantly increases the film’s dielectric strength.
2.Metallization:In a vacuum chamber, the film is coated with a thin layer of metal (typically aluminum) via a process called evaporation.
3.Film Slitting:The metallized film is slit into narrow strips according to the required capacitor size.
4.Winding:Two metallized films are wound together, slightly offset, to create the capacitor element.
5.Flattening:The wound capacitor is flattened to minimize its footprint and reduce production costs.

6.Terminal Application:Metal contacts (terminals) are applied to the exposed metal layers using a process called “schoopage,” where molten metal is sprayed onto the windings.
7.Healing:A controlled voltage is applied to “burn out” any microscopic defects in the dielectric film.
8.Impregnation:The capacitor is impregnated with an insulating fluid (like silicone oil) to enhance moisture resistance and improve performance.
9.Terminal Attachment:Leads are attached to the terminals of the capacitor.
10.Encapsulation:The capacitor is encased in a protective housing or coated with a protective material.

Metallized film capacitors have self-healing properties. When the film dielectric has defects at a certain point and a breakdown short circuit occurs under the action of overvoltage, the metallized layer at the breakdown point can instantly melt and evaporate under the action of the arc to form a very small metal-free area, so that the two poles of the capacitor are insulated from each other again and can continue to work, greatly improving the reliability of the capacitor.
